Database Project on Ibero-American History of Science, Medicine and Technology
This page in Portuguese        Esta página en Español
This work is still being planned. Its aim it to develop a set of databases with information on primary sources on history of science, medicine and technology of all Portuguese- and Spanish-speaking countries (Portugal, Spain, Latin America and colonies) from Renaissance to 1900.
This set of databases will contain information on several kinds of materials: published works (books, periodicals, theses, booklets, articles), iconographic materials (printed and manuscript maps, prints, photographs and other types of illustrative items), unpublished works (letters and other manuscripts) and objects (research instruments, specimens, samples, laboratories and other places related to research, etc.).
The databases will include information on all subjects relevant for research in the history of science, medicine and technology, including the natural and exact sciences, biomedical studies, geography, psychology, anthropology, sociology, philosophy, philology, techniques, etc. Works on subjects such as religion, law, literature (plays, poetry, fiction) will not be included.
The scope of the project includes works produced by: authors from any Ibero-American country (published in any country and in any language); foreign authors who have lived and developed their works in those countries; and scientific, medical and technical works translated to Portuguese or Spanish.
It is possible to estimate that the project can be developed in about 10 years, growing to reach about 400,000 entries (70% of the items will be published works) and providing detailed information about those primary sources, their location, and sources of information about them.
As a first step, information for inclusion in the databases will be obtained from about 2,000 printed reference works (bibliographies, catalogues, historiographic works, etc.) and complemented afterwards by information obtained in libraries, archives and similar institutions.
The development of this project will be possible only with the cooperation of researchers from the main Ibero-American countries. It will be possible to cooperate either providing information to be typed at the institution that will work as the center of the project, or by feeding the databases directly, from any country, by Internet (of course, with suitable security measures such as passwords).
