Abstract: In the early 20th century, non-euclidian geometries were adopted by the general theory of relativity and in this way they were incorporated to physics. This article discusses how non-euclidian geometries were used in physics before the 20th century. It studies authors who explored the possibility that space had more than three dimensions, or that time was a fourth dimension. The paper points out the physical origins of the first non-mathematical uses of non-euclidian geometries in the 19th century.
