["The principle of antecedence of causes in relativity theory"]

Paper published in: Anais da ANPOF 1 (1): 51-72, 1986.

Abstract: The principle of antecedence of causes – otherwise, the principle of retarded causality – states that a cause always occurs before or at the same time as its effect. This principle was used in the theory of special relativity to establish an objective ground for the chronological sequence of causal chains. It leads to deny the possibility of signals with speeds greater than that of light, because, in the context of this theory, they would allow sending signals towards the past. However, the development of cosmological models with rotation (Gödel) and the study of motion in the gravitational field colapsed bodies (Carter) have shown that the general theory of relativity allows situations where a physical system could travel to the past and produce effects that precede their causes. This work describes the historical evolution of the principle of antecedence of causes in the context of relativity theory and discusses the current dilema: to reject the principle (with all deep conceptual changes it would require) or to change the physical theory that is accepted nowadays.
